If you haven’t heard of Peckham, chances are you’ve been living under a rock. But not to worry, now you’re in the know (wink, wink). Amongst all the newly regenerated bars, cafes, and rooftops lies Bar Story, one of Peckham’s most popular hangouts. Situated underneath Peckham Rye station, you can practically see it when you step off the train so in that sense, it’s pretty hard to miss. A bit like the 24-hour tube or David Cameron as Prime Minister.
The first thing you notice as you enter is the quirky outdoor seating area, perfect for those warm summer evenings. During winter, they’ve usually got a fire going – so bring marshmallows. Bar Story boasts a rustic, industrial design with wooden tables and vintage candle centrepieces, all essential for those Instagram worthy snaps. Friday and Saturday evenings are pretty busy so it’s highly recommended that you get down early if you want a table, or to be completely honest just a place to stand. Yep, it gets that crammed. And just in case you were wondering, Bar Story is pet friendly so expect a dog or two; let the ‘Aww’ and ‘So cute’ phrases commence. It’s also open every day of the week: Monday to Thursday from 4 ‘til 10pm, and 11pm Friday and Saturday. It’s even open to the pretty late time of 9pm on the Sabbath- so there’s no excuse to not head on down to this boozy gem.

With a huge choice of tasty cocktails - almost too many to count - you will be going over the menu a good thirty to forty times. We’ve all been there, when you’ve not quite made up your mind but the bartender asks for your order and you have to randomly pick something because of the pressure. At Bar Story, you don’t stand to go too wrong just closing your eyes and pointing at this menu to be honest. It’s pretty stellar. Head over between 6pm and 7pm any day of the week to snag the two for £7 happy hour deal, and try as many delicious cocktails as you’d like. Maybe try a classic Margarita, or perhaps a Singapore Sling, although the signature Bar Story concoction is the ‘Bombphire’, a refreshing pick-me-up made with Bombay Sapphire Gin, fresh kiwi, elderflower, and mint. If cocktails aren’t up your alley, Bar Story also serves up the latest beers from around the world, as well as the finest wines. And just in case you forget to line your stomach with some grub before drinking, Bar Story serves delicious stone baked pizzas ranging from £6 - £8 or two for £10 on Tuesdays - deals galore. As for music, they play a range of party jams from Biggie to Beatles so there’s definitely something for everyone to nod along to.
Unfortunately here you won’t brush shoulders with Beyoncé or Jay-Z. It’s certainly a bar that attracts more of a local crowd. Young and trendy is the most accurate description in regards to the type of people that you will find at Bar Story. You can expect students, people who work in the creative industries, people who wear glasses with no prescription, bearded guys, those whose conversations inevitably lead to bearded guys.. The crowd at Bar Story are super friendly with absolutely no hostility, just folks wanting to chill and socialise with a drink.
It’s fair to say there are a lot of bars popping up in Peckham and picking one can be overwhelming if you’re as indecisive as 99 percent of the British population. If you want to dive straight into the hustle and bustle of Peckham, Bar Story is a great place to start. Decent people and a no fuss venue selling awesome drinks, it’s ultimately what we’re all in search of after a long hard day of procrastinating at work.
