If you didn’t make it to this year’s Olympics in Rio, you needn’t worry - Shoreditch has it covered in the form of feisty fiesta bar, Floripa. Named after a party island off the coast of Brazil, Floripa dubs itself ‘a tropical bar, restaurant and club’ with its distinctly Latin leaning and South American energy. Previously known as Favela Chic, Floripa goes for gold with brilliant Brazilian cuisine, flavoursome cocktails and an upbeat, free spirited atmosphere. Floripa also has an Olympic sense of occasion and grandeur. That’s why after 4 caipirinhas we were swaying like that. That was rhythmic gymnastics.
True to South American form, the interiors at Floripa are playful and vibrant. Giant disco balls dangle cast beams of light across the hordes of happy faces, while raffia chairs hang from the ceiling - (yes, the ceiling. We did try to reserve one of those but turns out they’re just for ‘decoration’). Along with the illustrations of parrots at the bar and colourful lighting, Floripa will just slap a smile across your face. There is also a projector showing classic, old school music videos, which further adds to the soulful Latin vibe. In short, this place is a tropical, exotic den, right in the heart of East London. And on a rainy Autumn night, we challenge you to find anywhere else that offers such instant escapism.

As well as a tempting menu of classic cocktails, wine, spirits and bubbles, Floripa has a vast selection of house cocktails all of which include their magical secret ingredient - Cachaca, Floripa’s signature Brazilian rum. Enjoy two for one cocktails from Tuesday right through till Friday for a very reasonable £9 - which, let’s face it is practically unheard of in London. The food menu is traditionally South American with a contemporary London twist. Lots of lamb, Brazilian sausage, beef, burgers and guacamole. But if you don’t eat meat, don’t fret, there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options too. Starters are priced from £3.50 upwards while mains go for £9.50 and above. If you’re going all out we’d highly recommend the Tabua De Carne meat platter followed by treacle tart for dessert. What? We’re on our holidays!
Just off Great Eastern Street, Floripa draws in a hip and trendy crowd. Spilling out into a fairy lit smoking area, Floripa may seem relaxed and chill during the week, but don’t be fooled. Come Friday and Saturday this place is busy with a capital B. DJs are here to stay until 3am, blasting a diverse mix of music - everything from Funk, to Reggae, Disco and even 50s Rock and Roll. Oh, and the staff members here are super friendly, mostly all Brazilian, and will happily chat away whilst artfully setting alight to your cocktail! It’s one of the only occasions we’re comfortable talking to someone whilst they literally play with fire.
Unbeknown to most, Floripa plays host to a series of intriguing events…potential date material? Why not stop by for the hip-hop brunch (yes, we are so happy this exists too!), enjoy some live bands, or if you’re feeling very adventurous you can always opt for a samba class. Alternatively, if you’re interested in private hire, the location options are abundant with The Chapel, The Stage and The Cabana all available for your very own tailored Latin event. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this is the perfect spot to grab a casual cocktail and a bite to eat with friends. But come here after work on a Friday and we can guarantee you won’t be home ‘til late. With its beachy, Aztec vibe, Floripa offers a lively mid-week escape, or a full blown night on the terracotta tiles. Needless to say, we’ll soon be back to further soak up the South American ambience. Ciao for now!
